MSR Hubba NX — Solo Tent for Conditions That Test Gear

At 2 lbs 2 oz, the Hubba NX is the reference solo tent for 3-season backpacking. It’s not the lightest option (ultralight options start at 1 lb 9 oz), but its pole durability and weather resistance give it longevity that sub-2-lb tents frequently don’t.

Waterproofing under rain

The fly material is 15D ripstop polyester with a 1500mm hydrostatic head rating. In a 4-hour simulated rain test at 2 inches/hour, the Hubba NX interior stayed completely dry. The seams are taped and factory sealed — no seam sealer needed out of the box.

Pole durability

The Easton Syclone aluminum poles have survived 40+ nights of use in our test unit without any stress fractures or hinge degradation. MSR’s DAC pole hub design has fewer failure points than clip-and-sleeve pole systems.

Setup time

4 minutes for experienced setup. 8 minutes for first-timer with instructions. The color-coded pole system makes correct assembly clear even in deteriorating light.

Comparison to Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1

The Copper Spur is 4 oz lighter and $20 cheaper. It’s less robust in sustained wind and heavy rain due to thinner materials (10D nylon vs Hubba’s 15D). For 3-season trips with predictable weather, choose the Copper Spur. For shoulder-season or stormy environments, the Hubba NX.
